SAN FRANCISCO BIRTH CENTER

Our design for the San Francisco Birth Center project transformed a 2,300 sf sterile medical office into a warm and welcoming environment for pregnancy care and childbirth.  The program for the SFBC sought to balance creating a comfortable and home-like ambiance to support natural childbirth while providing a facility that meets stringent medical licensing requirements.

Working closely with the clients, 3 midwives with a goal of starting the first licensed alternative birthing center in San Francisco, Jackson Liles Architecture designed a holistic renovation of the entire space under tight budget constraints.  The project features 2 Birthing Suites with private bathrooms, a Classroom for group pre-natal and yoga classes, a Family Lounge, Exam Rooms, and support spaces to meet licensing requirements.  Pre-Design services included site evaluations of several potential properties to help identify a suitable space to meet alternative birth center licensing requirements, as well as budgetary and other program requirements.  The  Birth Center is San Francisco’s first licensable Alternative Birthing Center, meeting State of California Building Code and State of California licensing requirements. It was our privilege to work with these inspiring midwives and to help them welcome new babies into the world in a natural way, while supporting their families in a safe and supportive environment.
