SAN FRANCISCO BIRTH CENTER
The San Francisco Birth Center is San Francisco’s first licensed Alternative Birthing Center, meeting State of California code requirements. The project involved the strategic renovation of an existing 2,300 sf sterile medical office space to create a warm and welcoming environment for childbirth under the guidance of midwives. The program of providing a facility that meets stringent medical licensing requirements, while creating a comfortable and home-like ambiance, required a rigorous yet sensitive approach to the design. Working closely with the clients, a group of professional midwives, Jackson Liles Architecture designed a substantial renovation of the entire office, under tight budget constraints. The project features 2 Birthing Suites with private bathrooms, a Classroom for group classes, a Family Lounge, Exam Rooms, and support spaces to meet licensing requirements. Pre-Design services included site evaluations of several potential properties to help identify a suitable space for licensing, budgetary and program requirements.
